2002 : Designing a High-Performant Real-Time Architecture Based on COTS-Components

Abstract
The operation of distributed real-time systems traditionally requires the use of custom-made components like microchips or high-precise oscillators. Most of the costs of such a system comprise design and production of these components. Therefore more and more considerations are made about the use of commercially available (and therefore cheaper)hardware. Because of the rapid development of technology, today's commercial components offer a quality that was unthinkable a few years ago. Therefore it seems sensible to think about the suitability of such components for distributed real-time systems (which traditionally have strict requirements to the hardware). This thesis has evolved as part of a European Union project that is about the evaluation of this suitability and possible limitations and problems. The goal was to build a TTA (Time-Triggered Architecture - a fault-tolerant distributed real-time architecture) system based on high-end COTS hardware. Another goal is to test the suitability of the TTA in the gigabit range, therefore the use of a high-performant network technology in the system is a key issue. This thesis describes the first phase of the project, where available technologies were examined with respect to the requirements of the project. The final hardware design is a part of this document as well as the choice of suitable software components (operating systems, hardware drivers, ...) Based on this decision, the last part of this document presents concepts for the upcoming implementation. The idea is to implement most of the TTA's concepts as optimal as possible on the available hardware. Most of the presented concepts are also valid for possible follow-up projects using other hardware, and can be used as guideline.
