2003 : Design of a Gateway for the Interconnection of Real-Time Communication Hierarchies

Abstract
There are several reasons for structuring a system hierarchically. One motivation is the reduction of complexity by dividing a large application into manageable subsystems. Another reason is the implementation of fault-tolerance. Further reasons are the integration of existing applications or the scalability of networks. In order to integrate several subsystems into an overall application, an appropriate interconnection of different networks is necessary.
A gateway connects two or more different network types so that information from one network is available to the other. Gateways in embedded fieldbus systems often have to fulfill requirements concerning real-time, dependability and cost constraints. In order to meet these requirements and to get best results for flexibility, the implementation was done under consideration of hard- and software co-design.
This thesis focuses on the gateway design for the Time-Triggered Architecture (TTA), which is an architecture for safety-critical real-time systems (e.g. in automotive and aerospace applications). In this architecture, two different protocols are specified: TTP/C for safety-critical applications requiring a high level of fault tolerance, and TTP/A for fieldbus applications, with an alignment to low cost.
We have designed and implemented a gateway that can be used to interconnect TTP/A, TTP/C, and CAN-networks. The approach supports other fieldbus types as well, which just requires a reprogramming of the on-board microcontroller for the specific protocol.
The gateway comes in the size of a small PCMCIA card needing only limited space and offers the possibility of fieldbus monitoring with a standard laptop computer. The use of Field-Programable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) extends the flexibility by supporting the integration of additional services and functions.
