2005 : Wireless Real-Time Communication

Author(s)
Bernhard Weirich
Abstract
Wireless communication poses several challenges and often enough solutions are not easily found, especially when dealing with real-time systems. This work explains what problems wireless communication has to cope with and what opportunities this kind of transmission provides. The reader shall get an overview of different approaches for managing communication between network nodes trying to achieve a reasonable throughput even under high traffic conditions. Weight is put on requirements demanded by small embedded systems. Several protocols for medium access control are presented each of which focuses on a special aspect of wireless communication and has its advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is not possible to state a specific protocol as superior to the others. So for each application it must be decided which protocol best suits the needs.
