Abstract
This paper explores the problems of using a real-time environment simulator for testing real-time systems. An overview of real-time systems and of real-time simulation is given first. Then it is shown how real-time simulation has to be defined in order to be consistent with our view of real-time systems. Within the context of our distributed real-time system MARS (MAintainable Real-time System) these concepts are finally applied. A technique to construct real-time environment simulators is developed, and a test bed architecture is described that permits the use of this simulator for driving test runs of a MARS system. This technique is specifically tailored to allow easy integration with the existing MARS Design Methodology and Design System.
