Abstract
If an embedded system controlling a machine is connected to the INTERNET it is possible to perform remote monitoring and diagnosis of the machine without having to dispatch a maintenance engineer to the site for the purpose of acquiring diagnostic information. It is also possible to remotely change setpoints via the net, given that adquate mechanisms for the security of the information and the safety of the machine are provided. The most difficult part in interfacing a hard real-time control system to the INTERNET concerns the synchronization of the operation of the controlled object with the unpredictable temporal behaviour of the INTERNET. The solution developed in this project takes advantage of the state-message based interfaces in the time-triggered architecture. These interfaces, the temporal firewalls, are periodically updated according to the real-time requirements and always contain an accurate real-time image of the controlled object. The local TTA Website looks at a snapshot of these state data whenever a request from a client arrives. Since a state-message communication does not require a strict synchronization between sender and receiver, an independent operation of the hard real-time subsystem and the INTERNET subsystem is realized, providing always the most recent real-time data to the requesting INTERNET client.
