Joint TTA and X-By-Wire Workshop

Time-Triggered Architecture for Safety-Related Distributed Real-Time Systems in Transportation Systems

Thursday, Dec 3rd 1998 at the Forum Hotel, Vienna

This workshops aims to share and promote the results of the EU-funded projects Time-Triggered Architecture (TTA) and Safety-Related Fault-Tolerant Systems in Vehicles (X-By-Wire), which both are elaborating a novel computer architecture for fault-tolerant distributed embedded real-time systems, the time-triggered technology.

Background

Major European manufacturers in the automotive (Daimler-Benz as the co-ordinator of both projects, Fiat, Ford, Volvo), aerospace (British Aerospace Airbus) and railway industries (Alcatel Austria), suppliers (Bosch, Magneti Marelli, Mecel, TEMIC, AMS, GENIAS), and universities (Technical University of Vienna, Chalmers University, University of Ulm, University of York) are participating in these projects, both of which will be completed at the end of 1998. The main results of the time-triggered technology are marketed by the new start-up company TTTech.

The objective of the projects is to achieve a framework for the introduction of ultra-dependable electronic systems in vehicles which do not rely on conventional physical backups. A common recommendation on the basic electronic and software architecture is elaborated, key components are implemented as prototypes, particularly a VLSI-implemented communication controller utilising a time-triggered protocol (TTP) and an engineering environment, and first application demonstrators are implemented. The project results will be evaluated for typical industrial applications from the participating sectors.

More detailed information about the workshop can be obtained from the workshop flyer (PDF version).
